The African Renaissance Monument
The African Renaissance Monument (Le Monument de la Renaissance africaine) is a 49m tall bronze statue (the tallest statue in Africa), situated on top of a hill outside of Dakar. Built overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, it was designed by the Senegalese architect Pierre Goudiaby on the premise of an idea presented by president Abdoulaye Wade and built by a company from North Korea. Site preparation started in 2006, and construction began in 2008. The formal dedication happened on April 4th, 2010, Senegal's "National Day", celebrating the 50th anniversary of the country's independence from France.
