Economy
Senegal is a poor country. A lot of the people live in poverty, and the unemployment rate is incredibly high. A lot of Senegalese people working in other countries will send remittances (money sent home) to their families. There's also foreign aid that helps the country as a whole.
Most of the Senegalese work in agriculture. They raise crops for their own use.
The idea of mercantilism is an economic theory that a country's wealth is in its gold and silver. Based on this principle, a country will try to export more than it imports, in order to raise a profit. Unfortunately, Senegal imports more than it exports. Senegal's major imports are petroleum products, machinery, and rice. It exports fish, other petroleum products, and phosphates. Because of France's close ties with Senegal, it has been the country's main trade partner since well before Senegal became independent from the governance of France. Trade with other countries is growing in the meantime.
